Hong Kong is located on the southern shores of China and has a perfectly shaped harbor for the import and export of goods that arrive and leave on huge tanker boats and ships. It is extremely populated, meaning a lot of people in a small area. There is a reason for this, and that is because it is a safe and prosperous location to live and work. The law system is different than in China, even though it is located in the region, it is one of freedom, independent living, and perceived as offering a high quality of life. Private hospitals thrive and offer the public the some of the best healthcare available. Educational systems were created similar to those found in England and they create bright, enabled students who are able to enter the work world with confidence.

Why is this location so successful? The reason is low taxes and free trade, plus their currency, or dollar is traded frequently. When wondering what capitalism looks like, this is the place to study and learn about it. Some economists create theories as to what slows or speeds up the growth of a region, and many believe the freedoms without government taking their cut is why the gross domestic product has grew so fast and benefited many. One might consider that there is no open land to produce agricultural products to feed everyone, but it is easy to overcome any barrier when there is no one taking forced finances and taxes for every piece of product that is exchanged.

Most drivers do not pay a great deal of attention to car tyres. The only time they take notice when tyres fail other than that putting air when the air pressure gets low is all that the drivers think is necessary. Well, they don’t need to pay much attention. Since 1960s car tyres have gone through a revolution and modern tyres are a lot safer and economical than before.

At the beginning, tyres were regarded as a part of suspension system. Then, suspensions were not so good, roads were rough. And thus, tyres were big, supple and were more susceptible to breakage. Old style white-wall tyres were notorious for dangerous blow-outs, because the lack of pressure in a single tyre could pitch the entire car heavily, causing a loss of control.

Engineers therefore developed thinner and thinner tyres, protected by more and more sophisticated suspensions. Researching on racing cars, engineers revamped the tyre technology. They manufactured flatter and wider tyres which can have more grip on the road surface. This not only improved grip but also aided the speed and handling. Tyres with inner tube were gone and fresh tyres with air-proof rim and air-tight seals against the rim emerged. Because inner-tubes were notoriously fragile and susceptible to breakage, this greatly extended the stress that a tire could survive whilst remaining inflated.

Throughout the 1990s, an emphasis was placed on tyre safety and long life. The extensive use of front-wheel drive meant that tyres will wear out sooner, as those tyres were doing both the driving and the steering. Therefore newer, harder tyres were designed, which were far better capable of withstanding wear and providing breaking power. New kinds of tread were also developed, and tires began to diversify, with tough, gripping tires for racing cars and soft, comfortable tires for commuter vehicles.

Tyres have gone through several revolutions and now are much safer than before. However, they are still not indomitable and need to be examined for wear by a mechanic 2-3 times every year. And tyres that had lost a lot of the tread must be changed by fresh ones as they make a big impression on gas mileage. Worn tread additionally makes it hard for the car to turn or stop quickly. The progress of tyres have made driving a lot safer and reduced the accidents to a minimum.

I’ve been looking into my family history recently to find out if they went through Ellis Island in New York in the early 1900s. It’s enlightening seeing how immigration laws have changed over the years. In the Ellis Island days, they go through all kinds of inspections. I don’t believe that’s the case today. And they certainly didn’t have lawyers back in those days (though they probably could have used some).

My research didn’t find any records of my descendants traveling through Ellis Island, but I really enjoyed looking into the history behind it all. While my family came through Boston, there were so many more who arrived in New York. And even though my family eventually moved to NY, their experience must have been largely different upon their arrival. They weren’t treated like 3rd class citizens.

But if you think about immigration today, one of the biggest issues is the Mexican border and illegal immigrants. While we may not to physical and mental inspections on people who want to become American citizens, we certainly make them go through plenty of red tape before they can become official. That’s why you see so many websites for abogados de inmigracion. I wish it wasn’t such a big ordeal. This country was built on the many cultural differences of those who entered through Ellis Island, and it’s wonderful to have that variety. Unfortunately, there do have to be rules and laws in place, because that’s how the world works. Life was a lot simpler back then.
