The Story of Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co and the Environmental Defense Fund

Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co (KKR) was established by Henry Kravis and George Roberts in 1976 with the support of the First Chicago Corporation. Recently they have assembled an unusual green project that concentrates not solely on maximized profit margins, but also on how environmentally aware each of their companies are. Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co’s Henry Kravis and the New York based Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) joined forces a year ago, hoping to make environmentally friendly business processes an acknowledged idea. These companies intended to tackle key green matters, including air pollution, climate change, ecologically unsustainable water consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. Eco-efficiency (the term was initially propagated by the WBCSD) is the technique used to achieve these targets, through applying policies like maximum use of renewable resources, improving fuel economy through vehicle fleet maintenance and optimizing data centers for efficiency. Simple and effective, even so the management didn’t see the full benefits of the project until the executive responsible for the program, Ken Mehlman, evaluated the program subsequent to its first year in operation.

Outdoing all expectations, Ken learned that practicing eco-efficiency not only raised environmental responsibility, but also increased the profitability of all their business organizations besides. Virtually all of the business concerns connected with Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co and Ken Mehlman now are involved in the program. And, when you consider that the group has a 2009 portfolio valued at 86,000,000,000 dollars, you can be sure this wasn’t a simple feat.

The original program now includes new and groundbreaking enterprises. The Climate Corps Program established by the Environmental Defense Fund is just one of these, it advances cost-efficient, environmentally friendly procedures to MBA interns.

KKR and Ken Mehlman have been developing a variety of metrics and analytic tools that administer resources. Products like these can evaluate an organization’s progress and identify any practices which might need improving.
